Existentialism is overrated

I’ve had something of an epiphany tonight, though it may have been the rum that sparked it.  I was talking to a friend of mine as she worried about an impending final exam.  The irony of it all?  The cause of her stress was a philosophy class about happiness.  Can you imagine?  Something that ought to spark ideas of appreciating the beauty of the world and finding something worthwhile in our tiny lives would instead cause stress and despair?  What an unfortunate failing of our educational system.  

Anyway, as I spoke to my friend, I realized just how misguided and confused we as a people have become.  So many will worry about when a project or a bill is due, when they will die, whether they might face some disease or accident, whether they will find love, etc.  I cannot honestly say that I have not also worried about these things.  But here and now, in this rum-influenced moment, for the life of me, I cannot understand why these things bother us so.  

Many will face an existential crisis when they recognize their mortality and question the worth of all the things that they do - Lord knows I’ve had my fair share of ugly nights when I did just that - but on this night, I’ve lost sight of why such ugly things seemed so ugly.  I can see the stars tonight.  How can we be so afraid of the things that are temporary when the things that last so much longer are so much more beautiful?  We need not cower in stone churches and hide our noses in old books with the hope of living forever.  Death is not so frightening so long as we can see the stars tonight.  I see beauty out there in the world.  Go take a look and I hope you see it too.
